Wallflower Explorer: Barter Books

Welcome back to my Wallflower Explorer series. In this series I suggest places you can visit on your own. Sprinkled with tips on how to be more comfortable going out alone. In my first post in this series Wallflower Explorer: Introduction you can learn more about why.

This week is a true gem of a place to visit. Barter Books is is one of the largest secondhand book shops in Europe *. It is less than an hours drive away from me which I am truly grateful for.

Barter Books is in an old train station in Alnwick, Northumberland. Along the top of some of the shelves is a model railway as a nod to its history.

As you might expect it is a beautiful building with thousands of secondhand books. In spite of this it never feels overwhelming. All the books are also fairly prices with most paperbacks being less than £5 and most hardbacks being under £15. Some signed hard backs and limited additions are more expensive.

In colder weather there are open fires with lots of comfy seating so it is unbelievably cosy. There is something soul nourishing about reading next to a fire. I don't know if I'm alone in this but sometimes it's nice to go out to read. Away from the distraction of technology and the ever present to do list at home!

One of the best things about Barter Books is if you take in your own good quality books and in return you can get store credit to spend on books instore. So far I have been able to pick up 6 paperback books using store credit. It's a good way to get new books without overwhelming your bookshelves! Especially if you are someone like me who usually only reads a book once.

For this reason I mentioned Barter Books in my post, 10 Simple Ways to be more Eco-Friendly.

Whilst browsing I recommend using the Goodreads App (from Google Play or the App Store) to scan books to read reviews. Obviously this is just a guide but if thousands of people have rated a book two stars it's probably worth a miss! It can help you to discover some hidden gems. Also stops you from buying a book just because the cover is pretty. Though we have all been there!

All that and they also have a café called Station Buffet.  It does delicious coffee and cakes. As well as cooked breakfasts and lunches. If you need a break for browsing or in my case when I come with my partner I leave him there with a full English breakfast whilst I explore. If you are sitting there on your own you can distract yourself with a book. It might even help you to decide whether to buy the book or not. And you aren't just sitting on your own staring into space which can be uncomfortable.

I hope from this post you can see Barter Books really is a special place. Whether you visit alone or with others. In some ways its better to go alone as you can browse at your leisure and treat yourself to a slice of cake!

Barter Books is open 7 days a week 9 am till 7pm (only closing on Christmas Day!) so you can visit anytime.

I hope you have inspired you to visit Barter Books if it is local to you. If not what is your favourite book shop?

  4. What a great way to use an old train station, this building has some great character! It looks so lovely. Unfortunately it is not close to me. The bookshop I would usually go into is Waterstones or in WHSmiths. I will have to look around at smaller book shops close to me. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you, it really is a lovely way to repurpose an old building. It is far away from Bournemouth! If you are ever up north though its worth a visit. Waterstones is lovely but you can beat a small book shop.

  6. Oh don't mind me, I'm just wishing I could teleport into these photos to explore the bookshop! I'm a sucker for a good bookstore and this one looks divine. Personally, I would recommend StoryGraph vs Goodreads while browsing (but of course, that's preference haha) but I know I'd find so many new and old favorites in a store like this!

  7. This secondhand book shop looks absolutely charming! I like the nod to its history with the model railway. Bringing in your own good quality books for store credit to spend is a fantastic idea!

I don't actually have a favourite bookshop, as there are lots of Charity shops in the city centre, close to where I live. I'll have to have a wander around and see if there are any hidden bookshops tucked away.

    Thank you for sharing. 😊

Charity shops are also a great place to find books. I have picked up a few from there as well. You are lucky to have so many charity shops close to you.

10 Simple Ways to be More Eco-Friendly

Over the last few years I have been trying to be more eco-friendly in the hope to reduce my impact on our planet. I am not alone in this, as show by the increase in veganism and the availability of eco-friendly products. I'm not saying I'm perfect but I believe if we all make small changes we can make an impact. Most of these changes also save money so even if you aren't that fussed about the environment we all like to save money! 1. Shop Second Hand  In the UK we throw away 350,000 tonnes of clothing every year*. Not only that but the fashion industry makes up 10% of humanities carbon omissions **. The easiest way to reduce our environmentally impact is to buy what is already there rather than being new. This is now easier than ever thanks to the internet. You can by second hand clothes online through Re-fashion which is easy to search through if you are looking for a specific item. The money goes to charity and the items that either aren't high enough quality or don&#

Painless and Practical Ways to Make Extra Cash!

There have been several times in my life where I have needed extra cash. From being a student to living in London where almost all my salary went on rent (to this day I still can't believe how much I spent on rent). Over the years I've found ways to make some extra cash.  As the cost of living continues to rise we are all looking for ways to make some extra cash. So without further ado let me share a few ways to make some extra cash.  Sell your skills Think you about what your skill strengths are and considering offering them as a service. Are you amazing at Maths or English? Consider tutoring local children. Or do you enjoy caring for children? Consider babysitting. You could even sell your art work or writing?  Sell your unwanted items Have a declutter and see what items you no longer use anymore and consider selling them. I have found high quality clothing sells well on Depop . I have made around £50 selling unwanted clothing on Depop . Facebook Marketplace is a great way to

Enchanting Reader: A Good Girls Guide to Murder Trilogy by Holly Jackson Review

My 2022 New Years resolution is to read a minimum of two books a month. I'm currently on nine books so doing well so far! I partly have to thank Holly Jackson as her trilogy (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder) helped me to get off to a flying start. As I read all three books in two weeks! I actually order the next two books half way through reading the first book. That in itself shows you how amazing this trilogy is.  A Good Girl's Guide to Murder has since gone viral on TikTok and for good reason! Before I review the trilogy I will share with you the summary of each book from GoodReads.  A Good Girls Guide to Murder (1) The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it. But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the murder, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn't so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final year project, she starts to uncover secrets that som
